Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is one of the best-known Croatian cities around the world and is located on a peninsula on Croatia's Adriatic coast. It has a population of about 43,000.
Dubrovnik has a long and rich history dating back to the 6th century and at the beginning of its existence it was known as Ragusa in Latin. After the Croats arrived and settled in the city and its surroundings, the name was changed to its current name after an oak forest that grew near the city.
Throughout its long history the city was ruled by a number of then powerful states. But it had for a long time been a city-state of its own, known in Croatian as ”Dubrovačka Republika” or in Latin ”Republica Ragusina”. In translation: ”The Republic of Dubrovnik”.
Named as one of the World Heritage sites by the UNESCO in 1979, this city should be included in every must-visit places of the Mediterranean. During a cultural journey of discovery in the old town, numerous sights and historical treasures could be found. A particular attraction for visitors to begin by walking a full circuit of the magnificent 13th-century City Walls. It'll take well over an hour. As the heart of the city, it enchants tourists and locals alike with its unique ambience. Its well-preserved buildings range from baroque St. Blaise Church to Renaissance Sponza Palace and Gothic Rector’s Palace, now a history museum.
