Antalya was founded according to ancient tradition in 159 or 158 B.C. Founded by King Attalos II of Pergamum. After him it received the name Attaleia. From 133 B.C. His kingdom came to the Roman Empire by inheritance, but Pamphylia broke up into a multitude of rulers that turned to piracy. This was only 67 B.C. ended by Pompeius. In the Middle Ages Antalya was often called Satalia in Western sources, but continued to be called Attaleia in Greek sources. In Byzantine times Antalya was an important Christian center and a major naval base. In order to be able to resist Arab attacks, the city, which had been surrounded by walls since it was a Roman city, was refortified in the 8th century. In 860, an Arab army conquered the city during raids, starting from Melitene and Tarsos. In the 11th century, the city became the seat of an Orthodox bishop. During the Crusades, the city often became a way station, in 1149 Crusaders fled here.
