Bodrum was once the ancient city of Halicarnassus with the earthquake-destroyed tomb of King Mausolus II, King of Caria (377-353 BC), considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. From the time of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, the amphitheater and parts of the Myndos Gate, once the western gate of the city, have survived. Finds from excavations in Bodrum and the surrounding area bear witness to a settlement in the region that is around 5000 years old. In Halikarnassos in the 5th century BC. the famous historian Herodotus was born, as was the rhetorician and writer Dionysius (1st century BC) from Halicarnassus. After the destruction of the city by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. Halicarnassus, however, lost importance. St. Peter's Castle, whose construction was started at the beginning of the 15th century by crusaders of the Order of St. John, can be seen from afar. After the conquest of the Ottoman Sultan Süleyman, in 1523 Bodrum and Rhodes fell to the Ottomans.
