According to recent research, this place was already in existence earlier, probably from the 3rd millennium BC. inhabited. Telmessos, together with the ruined city of Kadyanda, located about 30 km north in the mountains near Üzümlü, formed the western border of the ancient Lycian League of cities. Already at the time of the Lydian king Kroisos (middle of the 6th century BC) Telmessos was famous for its prophets in the entire eastern Mediterranean area.In Byzantine times the city was called Anastasiopolis, later it was called Meğri (Greek Makri). The city was renamed from Meğri to Fethiye in honor of the first Turkish military pilot, Fethi, who died near Damascus in 1914.
