Dodecanese

The Dodecanese are part of Greece, but most of these islands are just a short distance from the southwestern coast of Turkey, notably Kos and Rhodes, being only two of them. The west coast of Asia is a hundred miles from these scattered islands, where the lands fought by the Crusaders and Ottomans for centuries you will see. You can easily find traces of travelers in the region, from Romans and ancient Greeks to medieval knights, and the rich heritage also hints at Byzantine and more recent Italian occupation. It is as if the Dodecanese Islands have not changed since the times of Odysseus.

Cyclades

The Cyclades were colonized by the Ionians in the 10th and 9th centuries BC and flourished in the 8th to 6th centuries BC, but only Delos retained its importance thereafter. It served as the headquarters and treasury of the Delian League led by Athens in the 5th century BC. Ios, Mykonos, and Santorini are perhaps the best-known Cyclades islands. Besides, Paros, Naxos, and Milos, the lush Kea, the dramatic Andros, and Kythnos with its hot springs are less well-known. The Cyclades are located close to one another, allowing their guests to take a relaxed approach to their vacation.

Ionian

The islands were settled by Greeks at an early date, possibly as early as 1200 BC, and certainly by the 9th century BC. The early Eretrian settlement at Kerkyra was displaced by colonists from Corinth in 734 BC. The islands were mostly a backwater during Ancient Greek times and played little part in Greek politics. The one exception was the conflict between Kerkyra and its mother-City Corinth in 434 BC, which brought intervention from Athens and triggered the Peloponnesian War. Ithaca was the name of the island home of Odysseus in the epic Ancient Greek poem the Odyssey by Homer.
